The 1936 film "Anthony Adverse" is based on the 1933 historical novel of the same title by Hervey Allen.

Anthony Adverse is an infant in 1773 who is left at a convent of nuns along with some gold coins. He is the child of a nobleman's young wife and her lover who are both dead.

The convent sisters receive church permission to keep the boy for ten years while a priest takes over his education. Later Anthony is apprenticed to a merchant. As an adult his work takes him to various places around the world and a life of adventure and romance.

When the convent takes Anthony a member of the convent enters his name in their log book. The gold coins which accompanied Anthony are shown on a table.
